EduTech Asia Conference 2020

EduTech Asia Conference from 3rd to 6th November 2020

One of the privileges of working at MOE HQ is access to conferences and thanks to COVID-19, the conferences have all gone online and is therefore more accessible (through links in emails linked to platforms like hopin.to and swapcard). I will be sharing some screenshots here together with brief notes, reflections and captions. I will also include some links to the unlisted videos or relevant documents in case it may come in handy for future references.

Linda Liukas from Helsinki, Finland
"Does computer science belong in engineering, science, or arts? Are computers a tool or a toy? Computing education, as much as it is about learning to code, is also about creating a language for the children to talk about the world. Computers keep changing the world. What we can learn from stars, glaciers and mushrooms when it comes to computing education? And why we need a Whole Earth Catalogue or a Montessori method for early childhood computing education? And why start with childhood and its intense world-building, secrets and silences? This talk is made of computer science, stories, pedagogy, wonder, interdependency between theory and practice and one children’s book author trying to braid them all together."

Quote about tech from Spanish Philosopher

Greek etymology of the work 'technology'

The grammar of computers

Kids give algorithms for their peers to brush their teeth
Storybooks about tech e.g. Hello Ruby

This session made me think about possibly writing a book for children too while integrating tech into the learning experience. A hybrid of unplugged and immersive/virtual/online experience in a book could possibly be rather exciting and effectively engaging as an educational tool.

"Around the world, inquiry based learning is recognised as a way to engage learners by focussing on the exploration of meaningful, relevant questions and issues.  As learners investigate these questions they not only work towards deeper conceptual understandings but build importance  ‘learning assets’ such as collaboration, research skills, creative and critical thinking, communication and self management.   2020 has amplified both the need for and the  power of inquiry as an approach to teaching and learning that can help us meet the challenge of living with uncertainty.  In this keynote, Kath Murdoch will outline several key shifts that schools can make to build a stronger culture of inquiry using examples from her expensive experience working with teachers throughout the globe."

This sharing made me think about how I can be more entrepreneurial as an intrapreneur within any organisation that I am in even if it is not an Enterprise (remember Andterprise?).

Educators have known for years that one-on-one tutoring of students produces better learning than standard classroom teaching, but it is impractical to hire a distinct human teacher for each student. This talk will discuss new AI-based tutors that can give one-on-one attention to each student, can customize instruction to the current needs of each student, and can collaborate with their human teacher to jointly support student learning. We will discuss experience with current AI-based educational software from Yixue Squirrel AI, and ongoing research in the CMU - Squirrel AI Research Lab on Personalized Education at Scale, a multi-million dollar research effort at Carnegie Mellon University, funded by Squirrel AI.

The dilemma

When we participate as learners we have the greatest impact on moving the school forward – (Michael Fullen, 2014)The achievement of learning something new is a reward in itself. (Benedict Carey, 2014)The statements above provide some insight into how I view my role as a school leader. I have been able to work with educators as they guide students on their learning journey and truly love what I do. I am passionate about continuous school improvement. Through building teacher capacity, we create an environment for students to become reflective learners who see themselves as part of a global and connected society. The vision of a school as a place where we will all improve and grow is one that encourages everyone in the building to stretch. When everyone has that common purpose in mind, mistakes are more easily seen as learning opportunities and a culture of progress develops. It is with this in mind that continue my personal and professional growth and am interested in working in schools that share my passion. I have been fortunate to have worked on curriculum development and school improvement projects in a number of schools and in various capacities. Using needs and data analysis to identify the strengths and limitations of systems within schools, professional growth programs and student success, I have led and collaborated with teams to help make significant improvements in the written, taught and assessed curriculum. My experience as an accreditation chair, school inspector and my work with multiple curricula has allowed me to identify where schools need to focus their improvement efforts as well as identify areas of strength. Through the use of data evaluation, I have been able to help teachers guide students, classes, and departments to reach higher student attainment. Through the creation of professional workshops, I have been able to share my experience, coaching or mentoring teachers as they continue on their own personal learning journey.

The EduTech Asia Conference platform also facilitates networking and many vendors rushed to connect with the participants so as to possibly sell their products or raise awareness of their offerings. That part was a bit annoying but all in all the programme as a whole was quite insightful.
