Start-ups and sandbox

Highly recommended Kdrama about entrepreneurship

a sandbox helps start-ups grow as they can fail fast

I did not intend this week's session to be a Kdrama review. However, I feel that ever since I began watching the show (thanks to my colleague's recommendation), I realised that one can actually learn quite a bit about the start-up process and scene while watching a fictional show leisurely. Find out what one can learn from the show here.

In the past week, I attended another conference SFF x SWITCH (Singapore Fintech Festival in conjunction with the Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology). Refer to the infographics below from the post-event report to have a feel of the scale and reach of the event.

I was quite impressed by the backend prep for the site which hosted the conference as there were lots of interactive features and many tech organisations involved. I particularly liked the efforts by some organisations to set up virtual 360° tour of their innovation spaces. Those that did not put up virtual tours at least created special sites or videos with plenty of information and/or resources. I feel that for virtual experiences, this should be the way to go.

Here are some links worth checking out:

The other part of the conference which I really enjoyed were the pitches by various teams with business proposals and innovations to address various opportunity areas. They were all done online with comments and feedback from venture capitalists investors and management of different organisations. These were the Top 10 Sector Finalists and COVID-19 Challenge winners for SLINGSHOT 2020!

After all these talk about start-ups and innovations, I had the chance to dabble in it too thanks to Reactor School. They organised an Edu2025 Policy Hackathon which involves educators, students and Youth Sector Organisations (YSOs) who would be ideating to improve education for Singapore's future tied to the SG Youth Action Plan (YAP) values and adapting to a post COVID-19 world. I signed up as one of my mentees from SUTD had done an internship with Reactor earlier this year and he thought I would benefit and enjoy from this hackathon. I think programmes like this could be the kind of sandbox that the edtech or even education scene in Singapore requires in general to be more innovative and keep up with the times.

As the hackathon will only culminate with pitches and presentations on 19th December 2020, I will probably update more about my experience when it is over.
