Data Viz - Maps

Orlando from an Archipelago in Brazil

I was recently onboarded into an international community of youth leaders as part of Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute (VLI) 2022 Cohort 8. As part of the leadership development, we were asked to register Canvas accounts and complete some modules (some optional challenges - differentiated instructions). One of the tasks includes connecting with cohort-mates to find out more about their leadership project. That is how I ended up on a call with Orlando from Brazil despite our time differences (8pm for me and 9am for him). We spoke about differences in culture and more. His idea about uplifting the English language abilities of the teens on his island made me motivated to do more for my community too. It also made me wonder where exactly he was based especially since he mentioned that the Amazon region is huge. I embedded the map above for all of you to have an idea as well.

In my random explorations, I recently discovered a pretty cool Asia-focused data visualisation site called Kontinentalist

The site really has some beautiful data stories with interactive data viz for you to explore. One of the ones I thought was interesting was one about ghost sightings in Singapore

Then, I explored Kontinentalist's medium page and found that they have a handful of developers with highly technical skills for map vizzes.

A guide to colouring data viz

Chee Aun's work particularly amazed me.
