The e-MTLS  on 29th August 2020 was surely worth attending. Not only was it very easily accessible (it could be accessed through the Facebook page) they also had a website hosting the live streams and details. I decided to watch some of the videos as the symposium featured an ETD colleague, Ms Asnida Daud. I will write a bit about what I learnt (especially since the parts I watched and the screenshots I captured are in Bahasa Melayu) and also the plus points from the programme.

Ms Asnida is from ETD
I learnt that ETD used to be called ETV (1969)

Considering the times before the internet was readily accessible, the Television was a powerful tool for learning and education in general. There is little wonder why the unit/division overseeing Educational Technology then was made up mostly of  TV producers and content creators who used videos to tell stories or to even teach. Ms Asnida's sharing focused on Edutainment in Educational Video.

The sesame street methodology is so effective that papers have been written recommending it
Contents of her sharing include 1) Background and principles 2) Methods 3) Applications 4) Significance and Recommendations

Recommendations from Research

Research on the effective use of videos for learning
Principles 1. Age-appropriate for target audience 2. Context and Objectives 3. Cognitive Load

4. Involvement/Engagement of Students and 5. Interactivity

Ms Asnida also mentioned how our colleague Eileen won the Gold Innergie Award for the Bullying and Cyberbullying Interactive Video. That is something I'd definitely want to watch and try out.

Q&A by a fellow educator: How to make sure a child has truly learned after watching the video?

I actually asked about how to make interactive videos easily besides using EdPuzzle to insert questions and stuffs. I was thinking more along the lines of the choose your own adventure interactive video but there was no time for an answer. I suppose I can always learn from my colleagues here in ETD.

Hopefully, I get to win the prize as I secured more than 150 points. Even if not, I have learnt quite a lot and that is worth more than any tangible prize.
