Community Policing

I just got recalled for a 2.5 weeks reservist as a Police NS man and I had to go back to the east as I had always served there before I got married. I was lucky as I got to attend a 3-days Community Engagement (CE) course at the Home Team Academy before being deployed to a Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC).

It was quite enlightening as I had to go through content about SgSecure and the Community Policing System (COPS) in Singapore. Looking at how the experienced trainers briefed us reminded me of my own time teaching students about civil defence as part of my duties as an NCDCC officer. There was even a hands-on component with the MATRA Communications Set and a Scenario Based Assessment at the training village ccomplete with roleplayers and clipboard-wielding assessors.

I also learnt about the various efforts and initiative that the Singapore Police Force are doing to keep Singapore and Singaporeans safe and secure. I was quite convinced on the various ways one can volunteer to support policing work but I thought that I could also try to contribute with some tech innovation. With just a few hours, I played around the Spark AR software to create an Augmented Reality experience which could be used to boost the social media outreach as well as safety and security messages to the younger age groups within the community. Check out the materials I used and the thing I came up with below.

Update: I actually won the NS Excellence Award after this cycle probably due to my suggestions and contributions to the comms and engagement efforts.
