As part of a Young Mendaki Club (YMC) event that I volunteered for the past Saturday, several classes of teens under Mendaki Tuition Scheme (MTS) got the chance to hear from Tweeps (people who work at Twitter). The event which was originally planned to include a site visit of the Twitter office had to be done over a video call due to the Covid situation but it was no less informative.

The tweeps shared images of the Twitter office at CapitaGreen (138 Market St) in our 'virtual tour' although we initially planned for a 360 video or even a live video stream of the site. I suppose there were some security or confidentiality concerns so images of the office space were shared instead. The Tweeps also shared a bit more about the company for the participants to get a feel of the organisational culture and the work that they do there. They shared about their visions for an inclusive social media space which promotes freedom of expression and Twitter even has BRGs to support various causes.

Popular and trending tweeters in Sg

Interestingly, one of the countries where Twitter is pretty big is actually Japan. The other country where Twitter is popular is none other than the USA which is not as surprising especially with popular tweeters like Donald J. Trump.
Afterwards we had an ECG counsellor who gave a bit of guidance and set the context for the secondary school students and how they can consider a career in the deep tech industry.

Some sunrise industries worth considering

We ended the session with a visioning exercise and we got the students to explore and reflect on the possibilities considering their strengths and interests.
